Smallest extensions maximum space

The smallest extensions can achieve huge gains for an existing building. The two properties here which have just gained planning approval are very different buildings. The first is a barn and you would think following the profile of the existing roof would be the design solution; not so according to conservation. Lean-to forms to barns would have been in this style (for oil storage for example) and not follow the gable form. Who knew? The second is a classical (relatively new) build where the owners wanted a sun room, partially private but with lots of glazing to form a sun room. This was borne out of a love for the garden – but unable to spend time in it in winter months. Both extensions are small but contribute hugely to the inner layouts of the existing spaces.
